I ran a poll once when I first started one of my blogs on what knives you all are packin in the woods.
Since there is no one size fits all,I usually pack one big mother and one small to medium.Along with a leatherman multi.
I seen a recent article by a survival lady who said 7-9 inches was perfect any bigger we are talkin Rambo.
Damn call me John J. Rambo cause I like my RtakII and Cold steel Pendelton skinner as a good combo.
Also coldsteel Kuk machete and SRK combo.
Or my Gurka kuk and Schrade sharpfinger older original.
Or any of said Big knifes and my Military mora combo.
To me a lot of the medium knifes are too big for smaller duties and too little for bigger duties.
Tell me your thoughts on an all around good field knife. Or combo's. As soon as I get computer straightened out I will get pics up. I think I am finally shaking off this cold, sinus infection, flu, whatever that has been kicking my butt for over 3 weeks. Damn I am itching to get back at it!
So tell me what you have or would like to have!
Also what would you think of modified Gurka Kukri with proper heat treat, with kydex sheath with attached firesteel in $75 price range?
Thoughts and comments appreciated!

Hi China,
ReplyDeleteMy carry knife is a boxcutter. Stupid, I know, but it does everything I need a knife to do.

Added your new blog to the list...
ReplyDeleteI carry a multi-tool as the pocket item, keep a cold steel shovel in the car along with a small camp hatchet.
I have one of the blackjack Gurka Kukri tools, but don’t often carry that camping - shovel (cold steel or glock), tool knife (kabar, glock knife), multi-tool, and saw or hatchet (not decided what is best yet).
Gurka Kukri could pull double duty outside of a hatchet.
For 95% of what I do, blades less than 4 inches are fine. I usually carry a folding knife and a multitool. When hunting, I'll add a sheaf knife. When camping, I'll add a machete.
ReplyDeleteI daily carry a Cold Steel Voyager XL 12 inches of folding bowie knife. And don't forget the Cold Steel Recon Tanto. I love and use these knives. Small knives have their place but you cant replace a big knife with a little one.
ReplyDelete...depending on the trip, couple folders always, both gerber...my fixed blades are western and k-bar...haven't counted lately brother, but i got 'stickers' everywhere, many are hand-me-downs that don't get touched much, not to mention a couple filet knives in the tackle boxes...
ReplyDelete...hell,i'm gonna count them and get back with ya,now i'm curious...
Three skeleton folders about my person is a daily carry. When hunting or camping, add a rigid six-inch blade. Fishing, all the above plus a filet knife, though I've used the others to filet with no bad effects, just a bit slower going over the ribs. In my GHB is a seven inch C-S knife.
ReplyDeleteFor camping, I've carried a hatchet forEVER, even when I also pack a folding Swede saw that seldom sees use (but remains strapped to the canoe seat). One day, that saw will be used to saw up large chunks of trees. Until then, the hatchet splits up the campfire stuff well enough. (I maintain that any campfire that needs six inch thick pieces is not a campfire, but a fireplace.)
I'm a Gerber guy. :)
ReplyDeleteBlue, yeah nothing wrong Gerber.I have a couple myself.I actually won a raffle at christmas for a Bear Grylls folder. I wouldn't have bought one myself but I actually like it!It is a good knife!
